On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
John 7:37-38
One of the interesting things about the Gospel of John is how much unique material is contained there. These words of Jesus in John 7:37-38 are recorded nowhere else in Scripture. And it’s one of those passages that may be easy to read quickly and think we “get it.” But it turns out there’s debate among Bible scholars about what exactly Jesus meant here. What’s this living water? Where does it originate? What Scripture does Jesus have in mind?
I imagine that this is the kind of stuff theologians can spend hours batting around with each other in a library cafe. For the rest of us, let’s just know that the Holy Spirit is most likely the “living water” that Jesus had in mind. So he invites the people here - and by extension he invites all of us - to COME TO HIM. He calls us (loudly!) to come to him in faith and to accept what he has to offer - a forgiven, transformed, Spirit-filled life that is never-ending and overflowing with the work of his Spirit within us.
This week we come to Christ in our worship together, seeking not only for our spiritual thirst to be satisfied in him but to let the abundance of the Holy Spirit fuel our worship and our ministry to one another. For our families with youngsters we have childcare available throughout the service for ages 3 and under. We also feature a special Kids’ Time and activity bags during the service for all young worshipers. In this week’s sermon, Pastor Michael concludes our series on The Fruitful Life with a look at the Spiritual fruit of SELF-CONTROL.
Take the time to prepare for worship by engaging with the Scripture and songs for this week. Ask God to use our time together to draw you closer to Him, to build up His church, and to glorify Himself. This week’s song playlist can be found on Spotify and YouTube. Everything you need to know about our Sunday worship services can be found on our website.
I look forward to worshiping with you!
